£30,000 profits fund educational projects
Three social enterprises have been awarded funding totalling almost £30,000 by a Plymouth-based organisation.
The successful bidders are all based in the South West, include two schemes based in Gloucestershire and nature Workshops, based in Porkellis, near Helston.
The grant awards have come from profits generated by Apt Awards, based at the Tamar Science Park, which itself is a social enterprise.
Apt Awards is an Ofqual-approved national awarding organisation, helping to develop and deliver over 250 qualifications to around 200 UK schools and education providers.

Apt’s social enterprise remit is that it spends at least 50% of profits on social or environmental aims.
Its particular social aim is to widen participation in education, improving the quality and flexibility and access to learning opportunities.
All three funding recipients offer learning support in some way, with Nature Workshops set to use its grant to support its work with vulnerable adults, using the natural world as a classroom.
It aims to build confidence by teaching practical skills of bush craft and arts in locations across Cornwall supported by qualified staff.
Apt’s chief executive Christine Bullock said: “Operating as a social enterprise means that social, educational and environmental purposes are at the heart of what we do, and we are delighted to support the social enterprise activities of our approved centres.”
Formerly the Open College Network South West Region, the 45-strong organisation underwent a re-brand to trade as Apt Awards, in March this year.
The organisation became recognised by the national Social Enterprise Mark last year, with its £29,810 grant fund coming from profits generated in its financial year to July.
Further grants will be dependent on future profits generated by the company. Applications will be considered from social enterprises that can demonstrate that the how the financial support would contribute to the Apt’s educational objectives.
