300 unwanted cats in Plymouth looking for new homes
A CAT sanctuary said it is desperate to find homes for its new kittens as its waiting list mounts.
Gables Farm Dogs' & Cats' Home in Plympton has 77 cats in its care, with some of them just days old.
Katie Barkell, marketing and fundraising officer at the centre, said the lack of neutering has become an issue.
She said: "We seem to have more and more cats come in while the amount being re-homed has slowed.
"We have a mounting waiting list and we do not have the room to help them all. We are seeing a lot of cats come in with a litter of kittens because people are not having their pets neutered.
"There aren't enough homes for them to go to."
Many of the kittens in Gables' care are still being reared although quite a few will be ready for adoption in the next couple of weeks.
Miss Barkell continued: "A lot of them are not old enough for re-homing. The ones that are have already been reserved which is great, but we will have some becoming available over the summer."
Gables have a huge waiting list of 216 cats waiting to come in.
She added: "Those on the waiting list are still being held by their owners in the meantime but, for whatever reason, they are looking to find new places for them to live.
"We need people to come in and offer homes to the ones we have got so we can help some more animals."
