More than 4,200 people caught watching TV without a licence in Devon

MORE than 4,200 people were caught watching TV without a licence in Devon during 2012.

They included 130 in Barnstaple and 110 in Bideford according to figures from TV Licensing.

The average evasion rate remains at just over five per cent.

Warren Carr, of TV Licensing, said: “In order to be fair to the law-abiding majority who do pay for their licence, we’ll continue to pursue the small minority of people do not pay.

    “As the BBC has become a channel for the benefits of all things related to and promoting socialism it should now be made to find their money from other sources. Time for them to go down the advertisement route I believe. In fact the money paid for the TV licence could probably be better utilised by the government to help OAP's.”

    “Hi Stork, last year people were typically fined around £200 plus £60 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. The fine reduced to somewhere between £35 and £70 for those who pleaded guilty, although the additional costs and victim surcharge remained in place.”

    Was it cheaper for them not to buy a licence, compared to the number of years they had not had a licence ?
