KARI ARNASON is looking forward to returning to action and helping Plymouth Argyle end their lean spell away to Colchester United on Saturday.

Central defender Arnason missed the Pilgrims' last League One outing due to suspension and could only watch in frustration as the Greens slumped badly at home to Peterborough United on August 28.

However, the Iceland international is hopeful of forcing his way into manager Peter Reid's starting line-up for Saturday's trip to Essex and high-flying United.

Arnason acknowledged Argyle's present return of four points from as many league matches and consequent lowly position in the table were a concern to the players.

Reid's team have won just once this season, albeit memorably — 1-0 — in the televised season-opener away to then promotion favourites Southampton on Saturday, August 7.

Since then recently demoted Argyle have drawn 1-1 at home to visiting Carlisle United, but lost 2-1 at Walsall and then 3-0 to Peterborough at Home Park.

Just to add to the misery, the Pilgrims also exited the Carling Cup at home to Notts County on August 10, losing 2-1, and are now presently fourth from bottom the division.

Arnason, though, insisted that it was far too early into the 2010/11 campaign to start pushing the panic button.

And he said he believed that an upturn in the team's fortunes would be achieved 'sooner rather than later', and give their stalled campaign a kick-start.

Saturday, against fifth-from-top Colchester, would be a good place to start the Greens' renaissance, Arnason acknowledged.

"Yes, we need to start winning that's pretty obvious, and I'm looking forward to helping the team do that," said Arnason, whose absence from the Peterborough clash came after he received a red-card after tangling with Walsall striker Alex Nicholls.

"The spirit in the dressing room is still good, despite the fact we haven't made as good a start to the season as we'd obviously hoped for.

"The defeat against Peterborough was horrible and hard to take for everyone. But we're still learning to adjust to life in League One, which has been maybe just a bit more difficult than we thought.

"It's not just the fact that we aren't scoring enough goals, as I believe we have good enough strikers in our squad.

"We take a collective responsibility for ourselves and where the club is in the league, which I'm sure is only temporary. But it's something we need to turn around as soon as we can and nobody will be trying harder to do that than the players.

"We're working hard on the field in training and listening to what the gaffer (Reid) is asking from us. We just need to cut out some of the individual mistakes that have cost us dearly in games.

"Personally, I know, I've not been 100 per cent happy with my performances this season and want to do better.

"If we can do that and start to put our game together then I'm sure our true form will start to surface. However, everyone agrees it needs to be sooner rather than later."

“This bad spell started in November 2007. I cannot think any other team in the league has ever had such a bad run as this. Something is seriously wrong and it's about time someone did something about it.”

“I agree with some of the sentiments expressed here. Once the malaise sets in ( as it appears to have done ) it is difficult to shift and I think there is every chance Argyle will be relegated again.”

“Maybe Arnason could be the answer in midfield??

He joined us as an international midfielder but we've never really seen him there.

We have plenty of central defenders - maybe Seip could even be persuaded to earn his wages and play.”

“Good luck to the team, I hope 'old monkey face' and co have been working hard on keeping the back 4 tight and playing together. Secondly, in the sad absence of Summers, getting the midfield to pass the ball, here's the tricky bit FORWARD. Maybe then our maligned forwards may get the chance to hit the target.”
