FORMER shadow Home Secretary and Strictly Come Dancing star Ann Widdicombe (pictured) is the guest speaker when more than 400 Rotarians from The Midlands meet in Torquay.

The delegates from Rotary District 1210 which covers Staffordshire, Shropshire and parts of the West Midlands are attending their annual conference from tomorrow until Sunday.

District governor Trevor Davies, and conference chairman Lynne Deavin looked at several conference venues elsewhere before deciding on the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay.

Mr Davies said: "We like the centre for several reasons: the facilities are excellent and all under one roof; it will accommodate our numbers comfortably; and hotels are easily accessible.

The conference will be a mixture of Rotary business and leisure and includes TV presenter Olly Mann who often appears reviewing the papers, and BBC wildlife presenter Rhys Jones.

Entertainment will include Denise Leigh, who sang to three billion viewers at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics.

District 1210 were last in Torquay in 2010.

The Wessex District of Rotary is holding its conference in the Riviera International Conference Centre from October 18 to 20 with some 1,000 visitors and pumping around £1million into the local economy.

“Please don't describe this lady as a "Star". She is a failed politician, and has about as much talent for anything as... well, a failed politician.”
