A national children’s disability charity said it has been inundated with calls for help from families needing specialist sensory and development equipment.

Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children – which has funded £288,341 of essential specialist equipment for 120 children in Devon – also offers a Kit Box service, loaning out sensory and developmental aids to families across the UK.

But it is so much in demand that the charity currently has a waiting list of around 130 children, 21 of them in Devon alone, including some from Plymouth and Ivybridge.

Now Newlife is appealing to kind hearted individuals and organisations for help in raising urgently needed funds to kit out additional boxes.

Karen Dobson, Newlife lead nurse, said: “Some of this equipment is around £200 for a single item, which puts it beyond the financial reach of many of the families we support.

“The Newlife Kit Box scheme was launched to help alleviate this financial burden and to enable children to trial equipment.”

Kit Boxes – containing between £300 and £400 worth of equipment each – are available to borrow, free of charge, from the charity by contacting the Newlife Nurse Helpline on 0800 902 0095 or by emailing nurses@newlifecharity.co.uk.

Anyone thinking of helping the charity, or holding a fundraising day, is asked to call the Newlife Community Fundraising Team on freephone 0800 988 4640.
