'Wembley of the South West'
PLYMOUTH Argyle's ground could become the Wembley of the South West, according to the club's executive director.
Keith Todd wants to see Rugby League games and international football matches played on a multi-purpose pitch at Home Park, as well as the venue hosting major music concerts.
The Argyle boss spoke as the city prepared a bid to host World Cup games in 2018.
Earlier this week, he told a House of Commons reception that a successful bid would provide an economic kick-start in the region. Mr Todd said yesterday that win or lose the bid, he was determined the stadium would be developed.
"We will be looking at putting in a multi-purpose pitch – not just for soccer but for rugby. We know Rugby League is interested in expanding."
Mr Todd said international football could also be played at Home Park. It was very unlikely that England games would be staged – but he suggested Caribbean countries could play at the ground.
And Home Park could be thought of as a venue for major sporting events and music. He cited the Rod Stewart, Elton John and George Michael concerts staged at Home Park as successes – but he said the scope for concerts like those were limited now due to the pitch.
He added that with the right sort of pitch that could tolerate the weight of thousands of fans, the opportunity for more big music events became a possibility.
Argyle's World Cup bid consortium has until November 26 to put together a submission to the FA. In the second week of December, the consortium will make a presentation to the FA and, on December 16, it will know whether or not it has won.
Mr Todd said of the Home Park plans, which are expected to be officially unveiled by the end of the year: "It will happen but, with a successful World Cup bid, it makes it all the more credible.
"We now need to get the people of Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall to be really vocal and register their support."

“If they marketed it right, then it could be alright. Host some international friendlies, maybe the FA Cup semi final, or even attract some big names to Argyle for pre-season games.
But there needs to be comparable money going into the club itself to try and make that push to the Premiership, which would then make the whole thing sustainable.”

“Terrific for rugby, international football, rock concerts, but Argyle Vs Scunthorpe on a Tuesday evening in February ? We need at least 22,000 per home game in a stadium like what's being proposed, just look at the Ricoh at Coventry, absolutely no atmosphere, awful.”

“That would be brilliant!
And no, I'm not an Argyle fan.”
