James Spray, a 19-year-old striker who has been released by Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, has emerged as a potential new recruit for Plymouth Argyle.

According to the Express & Star newspaper, which is published in Wolverhampton, the 6ft front-runner has held talks with the Pilgrims about a move to Home Park. He is a free agent, following his departure from Molineux.

Birmingham-born Spray linked up with Wolves as an Academy player in 2006, and signed a professional contract three years later.

Spray made his competitive first-team debut for Wolves in a Carling Cup third-round tie at home to Millwall in September last year. He was thrust into action as a substitute in the 74th minute of the match, and he was initially credited with a goal three minutes later.

Spray struck a shot which was deflected past Millwall goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall by team-mate Sam Vokes, and eventually it was Vokes who was credited with the goal – Wolves' fourth in a 5-0 win.

A month later, Spray joined Argyle's npower League Two rivals Accrington Stanley on a month's loan. He made three first-team appearances for the Lancashire outfit before returning to Molineux.

Another player who was let go by Wolves at the end of the 2011-12 season was winger Ashley Hemmings, who spent most of the past campaign on loan to Plymouth.

The 21-year-old, who scored two goals in 23 League games for Argyle last term, has reportedly rejected a deal put to him by Rotherham United.
