Ilfracombe could become home to a new artificial grass pitch, if it can be demonstrated that the facility is really needed.

If the proposal goes ahead, the 70x40 metre artificial grass pitch would be sited at Ilfracombe Arts College. It would be a 3G rubber-crumb facility with floodlights, similar to the one at Braunton College (pictured).

North Devon Council is already working with Ilfracombe Arts College, The Football Foundation, Devon County Council, Ilfracombe Town Council and Ilfracombe Town Football Club to bring the project to fruition, but says local input would boost its chances of success. It is asking local people who want to use the pitch to contribute to the project's business plan to show that the facility is needed.

Those interested in using the pitch can fill out a spread sheet on the Council's website. The council will then use the information to demonstrate a need for the pitch. Anyone who fills out the form will get first refusal on available slots.

“Far better than grass for hockey. I remember playing hockey on grass pitches back in the old days. Plain dangerous!”

“I think that it is only fitting to switch from natural to artificial grass if a lot of people will benefit from it. More so, these artificial grasses that are so popular these days are also designed for many purposes that is why, if you have specific needs, you can always find a manufacturer or installer that will make your lawn or school field just the way you want it.
