Auction of pottery nets £100,000
A COLLECTION of curio Staffordshire pottery belonging to a former Torquay antique dealer has sold at auction for more than £100,000 raising money for Rowcroft Hospice.
The Victorian portrait figures of royalty, opera stars, pugilists, actors, war heroes, exotic animals and a lion wrestler were owned by Paul Stockman and his wife Dorothy.
The pair ran an antique business in Torquay until the 1990s. Paul died in 2010 and Dorothy earlier this year.
The sale at Exeter auction house Bearnes, Hampton and Littlewood, fetched £107,000 with the money going to local charities. The 2,000 ceramics were sold in 350 lots.

Auctioneer Nic Saintey said there was a huge amount of international interest in the sale, especially from America.
He added: "This is a collection of Victorian social history.
"Paul Stockman and his wife were very private individuals, very enigmatic and shrewd. He was the face of the antiques business which operated between the 1970s and 1990s."
The main charity beneficiary will be Rowcroft Hospice in Torquay.
Rachael Bryett, head of fundraising and supporter development at Rowcroft, said: "We are delighted to have received such a generous legacy from Dorothy Stockman's estate.
"We are indebted to Dorothy and people like her who support Rowcroft's vital work in this generous and kind way.
"It will help provide care to more than 1,800 local people living with life-limiting illnesses each year."
