YOUNGSTERS from across the South Hams have been helping their council reach out to their peers through the internet.

South Hams District Council has drafted in young advisors to create a new 'micro' website aimed at providing information and support for the younger generation.

A group of young people from across the district, aged between 12 and 18, visited the Council's offices at Follaton House, Totnes to take part in a workshop about the project.

The Council is committed to improving the way it communicates with young people and addresses their needs. It is hoped the new website will offer useful information about the opportunities and support available to young people living in the South Hams.

The workshop was the brainchild of Cllr Kathy Cuthbert, who is leading a group on the Council looking at how the organisation can improve its work with young people.

Cllr Cuthbert said: "I was a youth worker for many years and I'm passionate about giving young people a voice. It's vital that the Council has this kind of meaningful engagement. The young people attending the workshop were very enthusiastic and have come up with some great ideas. I hope this is just the start of our commitment to working with young people and putting them at the heart of decision-making about the services that affect them. "

The new micro website for young people is due to be ready early in 2013.

Young people across the South Hams can have their say on the project by completing an online survey at www.southhams.gov.uk or by contacting Gill Till on 01803 861234.
