ACTRESS Emma Thompson stunned students at Exeter University by telling them: "Nick Griffin would feel very comfortable here".

The Oscar-winning actress made her comments in a speech to students after claiming her Rwanda-born son Tindyebwa Agaba suffered racist abuse during his studies in the city.

Ms Thompson, 50, said the BNP leader would "love" Exeter University because there was so much "depressing" racism there.

Tindy, 22, read a politics degree at the university, but his mother said he suffered a "rough" time with "unpleasant experiences" because he was black.

She visited the university with Tindy and actor and writer Kwame Kwei-Armah to talk about racism in society.

Ms Thompson urged staff and students to be more tolerant and told them "It's up to you" to accept ethnic minorities more.

She also promised to return to offer further help and anti-discriminatory advice.

One member of the audience raised the issue of the BNP and comments by Nick Griffin that London was no longer a British city.

Ms Thompson, who starred in Nanny McPhee and Love Actually, replied: "He'd love Exeter, he would feel very comfortable here."

The woman asked: "What can we do to change the whiteness of Devon and Cornwall, how can we expand our university?"

Ms Thompson said: "This is how we're doing it (by talking about it). It's depressing when people think nothing is being done about it. Tindy had his experience and now we're having a big week of educational events to try and help it.

"You're not going to get hundreds and hundreds of black students here overnight, but what you can do is make them more comfortable."

The actress was hosting a lecture at the university's Streatham Campus, entitled All Africans Now: Artistry and Activism, aimed at promoting racial equality.

Tindy opened the event, wearing an Arsenal shirt and jeans, saying he had suffered racist problems in his first year.

He added: "I studied politics and international relations here and had a beautiful time, especially in my second and third years, but I had some problems in my first year.

"But in all, I had a wonderful time here with beautiful people."

Ms Thompson and actor husband Greg Wise adopted the former child soldier in 2003 after he fled genocide in Rwanda. Tindy's mother and sister were abducted and raped by soldiers and his father died of Aids two years later.

University spokesman Stuart Franklin said: "Racism is a sad reality of British life.

"We would be naive to think racism did not affect some of the 18,000 people who work and study on campus.

"The university has a zero tolerance approach to racism and has a number of strategies in place to promote this and to support any staff and students who experience racism.

"We take regular soundings from staff and students and there is no evidence to suggest there is a widespread problem in Exeter."

“:| And Theo I can confidently tell you, you will very rarely, if ever, see a Black man begging on the street. . . It has never been an acceptable part of their culture. . He would almost certainly have just been a con-man.”

“Henry. How old is your OED?

I use the Concise O D, not to hand right now, but this year's edition. It capitalises Gypsy. I checked it out the other day as I got given the Guardian (OK, CH? ;-) ) The Guardian Style Guide for Christmas.”

“:| Only at the beginning of a sentence Theo. . The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) states that a gypsy is a member of a wandering race (by themselves called Romany), of Hindu origin, which first appeared in England about the beginning of the 16th c. (by hotchkiss) and was then believed to have come from Egypt. . :) Best Charles”

“A note for the WMN editor, who is a wonderful bloke and edits a good provincial newspaper, which I enjoy.

"Gypsy" should usually be capitalised "_G_ypsy". The Concise Oxford Dictionary concurs.”

    “The Mod?

My comment about a beggar with a sign "Please help me. I am blind and I may be black" was deleted.

    Mod rhymes with God.

However, I heard this comment (and it's probably not original) from the Nobel Laureate poet Derek Walcot (from the Caribbean) at a talk he gave in the USA.”

    “Ben Ger posted:

"I wonder if there were any Welsh or Scots or Irish who got the p1ss taken out of them at college?"

As an Irishman, I am used to having the p*ss taken out of me. And I can laugh at it.

But _racism_ is different. I happen to have a "cut glass" English accent. A couple of times recently in the Westcountry I have come across severely _racist_ anti- Irish conversation. Once, I had to leave a dinner party pretending "sudden illness". The alternative was to say something, which would have been severely embarrassing to my host and hostess. I was seething.

The racist was Devon "rural squirearchy" of many generations and a Countryside Alliance activist.

(This is not a comment that is anti-hunting. It is a comment to show the racism in upper class Devon society.)”

“When I study the elite structures across the centuries, the one thing I find is the social divisions and inequalities they create in the greater world. In fact the creators maintain this oppressive structure, and are the sole beneficiaries of it. Rascism in Europe started well before capiatlism. The fieudal lords and the elite Crown of Spain obssesed over the concept of the "puirty of blood". This concept became strong in Spain in 1400's, when the spainards fought against the Moors invaders. The concept of a superior race relates also to the Empire of Rome. The Romans regarded many tribes, including Germans and Francs to barbarians, brutes and of low-intelligence and destined to be submitted to the role of fasciae. Domination is better than togetherness. For a unified social humanity is what the elites don't want. I take my hat off to you B. Jenkins for admitting that what we are seeing is the progressive move towards a new imperial system of change, under the guise of social marxism. The old world order changing into the New World Order. The new order is a pre-text for World Govt. I was alone voice on this online paper about these issues, but I know of many people that feel that we are heading towards a Dark Age that will be the last time that humanity has a choice to change it's destiny before the elites create a new world which will be from the darkness of hell. Even the Bible states that a World Government is the beginning of the end of humanity. it's covered in the Book of Revelation. I'm not religious, but it's clear and plain to see. Very well said B. Jenkins. Your 99% correct. Best Freethinker”

“Without doubt in my view, one of the greatest tools for social engineering is the realm of public education. Education has been advanced as significant in bringing about changes in attitudes, behaviour, beliefs and values to the wider social society. In order to redirect behaviour and values towards institutional change. Social darwinism is a prime example of how a racially stratified society, racial violence is used as a method of social control to maintain the structures of subordination. Race can be used to breakdown social structures within society. The elites who control the scientific high ground as well as the economic structures of the world use social darwinism to justify Imperialism, racism and conservative economical policies. Education is used to push through the divide and conquer strategy in human society over many issues. Rascism is a way of surpressing different social groups like white against black etc.... I would say it's a divide a rule system the elites have created in the old world order. Rascim and sexism are two paramount structures of domination which the world dominant ruling class (elites) maintains it's power . It is a perfect weapon of choice to use against all humanity to prevent ethnic groups from reaching the social ruling classes that matter the most. Education is the greatest tool to start the sub-division of racial attitudes. Freethinker”

“Shame Ms Thompson didn 't highlight the wonderful education that Exeter provided which is the culmination of centuries of development by the English.

I wonder if there were any Welsh or Scots or Irish who got the p1ss taken out of them at college? Or does that not count as they are not black. Maybe if Ms Thopmson had instilled a few masculine values in her son, he woudl have been able to take the mickey taking on the chin like a man.

But like all of her ilk she wants to reduce us all to her bland, unimaginative, low level of saccharine coated imbecility.

PC lunacy is ruining this country.”
