BAMPTON'S Paul and Donna Berry are thrilled after seeing both pubs they run in the town appear in major guidebooks this year.

The most recent being the highly rated Michelin Red Guide and The Michelin Eating out in Pubs Guide 2013.

Paul does not believe there will be many towns that have two pubs listed under each other in the Red Guide – unless your name is Heston Blumenthal from Bray.

The Swan and the Quarryman's Rest both offer something different from each other, catering to the wider taste of the general public. All beer is mainly from South West breweries, which is important to both Donna and Paul. By purchasing locally you are more likely to get the support of breweries like Exe Valley, Otter and Exmoor, they say. All other drinks are purchased from Tolchards, Newton Abbot. The Swan has been included in the 2012 Good Beer Guide for the first time, which is great testament to manager Steve Bedwell.

Food is just as important in both pubs with The Quarryman's recently keeping its AA Rosette and The Swan was also awarded a dining award from The AA. Both pubs were awarded 4 stars for accommodation.

The pubs are supplied by Weston's Farm, Heal Farm and the Butchers Shop. Vegetables are also sourced locally. The couple say they could sell cheap cuts of meat, but knowing where the "providence of something comes from is really important."

Paul said: "It's also nice to have a wander round the market in Tiverton – only last week I purchased some beautiful Jerusalem artichokes that have been grown at Knightshayes, they are great when they are in season.

"You might find dishes like Ox-cheek with horseradish mash or our own chilli and mozzarella beef burger at The Swan, which according to a Londoner who frequently stays with us, would give a big brand a run for their money.

"The other surprising thing is The Swan doesn't take bookings for tables – just turn up and we will feed and water you."
