Barnstaple's Blockbuster store remains open despite another round of closures
Barnstaple’s Blockbuster store is to remain open despite the announcement today that a further 164 stores are being closed across the country.
The news comes after administrators Deloitte took over the company in January and gave notice that 129 stores would be closing.

Today they have confirmed as a result of reviews and discussions with landlords and other parties that more stores are to shut down as part of a phased closure.
But a Deloitte spokesman confirmed Barnstaple’s North Walk shop is not on that list. It was also confirmed the shop will continue trading as normal.

Blockbuster, a DVD and games rental company, had 528 stores at the time of going into administration, employing 4,190 staff.
Those working in the stores on the closure list will now face redundancy but Blockbuster state they are running an Employee Assistance Programme to assist them in finding new jobs.
Lee Manning, Joint Administrator, said: “We have continued to review the performance of individual stores since our appointment a month ago and have concluded that further closures are necessary in order to restructure the Company for sale.
“We would like to thank the Company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time and we are also grateful for the continued support of customers.
“We are in discussions with a number of parties interested in purchasing all or parts of the business and will update on progress in due course.”

“I reckon this is the first time a shop in our area has benefited from BT's refusal to supply any sort of decent broadband to virtually all of north Devon. It means there are loads of people who cannot use Netflix or similar services and in turn means a physical store in Barnstaple is still viable.”
