NATIONAL Apprentice Week (March 11 to 15) aims to increase awareness of the benefits of apprentices.

In North Devon the Employer Showcase and Apprentice Expo events at the Barnstaple Hotel on March 14 will feature employers, training providers and educational establishments able to advise on all aspects of apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships are becoming more popular as a result of such activities and more employers and jobseekers are finding out, but there are still many people who do not know about them.

Jobseekers can still miss vacancies that are not advertised widely, leading them to think that there are no opportunities available, while employers can think that jobseekers cannot be bothered to apply.

The National Apprenticeship Service is tackling this through its Apprenticeship Vacancies website www.apprenticeships.org.uk, where employers and training advisers can advertise their vacancies for free.

It has launched its own AV Search app for iPhone and Android. This enables jobseekers to search for opportunities on their mobile phones.

Nearer home, the North Devon Employment and Skills Board will be taking out a full-page advert of apprentice vacancies in the Journal in April. Employers and training providers wishing to advertise their vacancies can email Sarah Grigg for details at sgrigg@northdevonplus.co.uk

Apprentice vacancies need to be advertised effectively to attract quality applicants.

This means creating a compelling advert that sells the vacancy to applicants and promoting the opportunity as widely as possible.

These free and low-cost options enable employers to promote their vacancies.
