A celebration of "the dance that is cycling" in the form of a ballet on wheels arrived in the Westcountry as a warm-up to the Tour of Britain bike race – which is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people.

Brighton's Bicycle Ballet – an outdoor dance performance on bikes – entertained visitors and shoppers in Exeter's Princesshay shopping centre yesterday, ahead of the fifth stage of the elite cycling race which today makes its way from Exeter to Exmouth.

There are more events planned in Exmouth today when Exmouth seafront will be turned into a "market-style" venue from 9am, with stalls and entertainment organised by the Rotary Club, and another performance by the bicycle ballet later in the morning.

The Tour of Britain race is expected to finish this stage of the gruelling competition at about 2.30pm on Exmouth seafront.

Thousands of spectators are expected to turn out to watch the Devon stage of the thrilling cycle race.

Stage five of the tour features three Skoda King of the Mountains climbs on Dartmoor at Haytor, Coffin Stone, and Huccaby Tor, and three intermediate Yodel Sprints at Cheriton Bishop, Crediton and Rockbeare.

The route also takes in Pathfinder Village, Tedburn St Mary, Moretonhampstead, Bovey Tracey, Bow, Broadclyst and West Hill.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "The excitement surrounding the tour has been building for months and it should again prove to be a fantastic occasion for people across the county.

"The tour has attracted some of the biggest names in cycling, which is great for spectators and even better for local businesses in Devon, who will benefit from additional visitors to the county."

Crowds will also be able to cheer on Devon rider Jonathan Tiernan Locke, who was in contention in two jersey competitions as the race headed to Wales, and who is in 16th place overall.

The Fifth Stage of the Tour will start at about 10am today at the Cathedral Yard in Exeter.
