A puzzled council is trying work out how one of its wheelie bins turned up over 1,000 miles away – in Hungary.

Exeter City Council chiefs were left scratching their heads after a phone caller said they had spotted one of the green bins on the other side of Europe.

They suspect a tradesman filled it with tools before leaving Exeter and driving east.

Robert Norley, Exeter's assistant director for environment, said: "We have reports of 695 bins going missing a year. People who move house sometimes take them, some times people use them to wheelbarrow things around.

"We want to discourage this and encourage people instead to really look after their bins.

"We would recommend that people paint the number of their house on the bin so that it is easier to keep track of."

Replacing the missing bins costs the council around £100,000 each year.
