Bogus caller warning
RESIDENTS in Tiverton are being warned to be alert following reports of distraction burglaries in Tiverton last week.
Callers turned up in unmarked cars and claimed they were from utility companies and used fake IDs to try to gain access to properties. Once inside, the callers attempt to distract the homeowner, before stealing items. An elderly couple living in Elmore Way were among those targeted by bogus callers last Thursday.
Devon and Cornwall Police advise anybody who has a visit from any person claiming to be from a utility company to ask for their identity badge and ring the telephone number listed for the company in the local directory, not a telephone number given by the caller. Remember to secure the door before calling to check credentials.
Police have been carrying out reassurance visits and will be undertaking extra patrols in the affected areas. If you see anybody acting suspiciously please telephone the non- emergency police number on 101.
