MILITARY boxers are joining forces with a city boxing club to make Team Plymouth ahead of a charity match against the Western Counties.

The fight is the project of Sergeant Major Alex Cochran of 29 Commando. It will be hosted at the Royal Citadel on Friday November 30.

This year, the units want to thank the city for all its support and will be donating half of the proceeds to local charities.

In previous years the money has been given to military and Afghanistan charities but Sgt Maj Cochran said he felt it would be nice to give something back.

"Last year, after the overheads and costs were taken out I managed to raise almost £10,000. I had a lot of good feedback not just from the military attending but civilians too.

"The only difference this year is we will be donating to civilian charities here in Plymouth."

Team Plymouth will be made up of boxers from Carl's Boxing Stable, 29 Commando and HMS Drake.

They will take on Weston Counties boxers in a marquee set up on the Citadel's parade square where there will also be a bar available.

Sgt Maj Cochran added: "Last year it was one of the best atmospheres. Most people see the Citadel as the huge fort on the Hoe but they don't see what goes on in here. The location we have for this boxing is unique and for local people it's a chance to come into the Citadel."

The tempo hasn't dropped off for members of 29 Commando with soldiers deployed in America and in the Mediterranean.
