Devon hopes in the FA Cup will now lie with the county's Football League teams as Buckland Athletic and Bideford were knocked out at the second qualifying round stage.

Brave Buckland – newly promoted to the Toolstation Western League top flight – lost 2-1 at home to newly relegated Blue Square Bet South side Bath City despite taking the lead through the prolific Gavin Hammon.

Hammon claimed his 15th goal of the season in the 52nd minute of an enthralling tie at Homer's Heath, after City goalkeeper Glyn Garner failed to get sufficient purchase on a punched clearance.

The Bucks' top scorer rifled the ball in to the delight of home supporters in a bumper 367-strong crowd.

Bath's 32-year-old left-back and former Bristol City player Aaron Brown – who spent loan spells at Exeter City and Torquay United during his Football League career – levelled with a stunning 30-yard strike in the 58th minute.

Kurtis Guthrie headed the Romans ahead in the 71st minute from Luke Cummings' cross, but there was still time for home midfielder Mike Booth to head just over and Danny Gaze to come equally close with a shot as the Bucks went in search of a leveller.

Bideford suffered a 2-0 knockout at Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division rivals Gosport Borough.

Skipper Brett Poate and Luke King scored first-half goals for the Hampshire side as they won through to the third qualifying round for the first time in five years.

Poate, who had an early effort cleared off the goal-line, opened the scoring on 25 minutes with a superb shot that flew in off a post.

King made amends for an earlier missed opportunity when he headed home Gosport's second goal in the 38th minute, converting Justin Bennett's cross.

Bideford had the best of the second half, buoyed by second-half substitute Issac Vassell, who is on loan from Plymouth Argyle.

The Cornish forward tested home goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore and also teed up skipper Matt Hockley, whose effort came back off a post.

Joe Bushin scored twice as in-form Tiverton Town beat Shortwood United 2-1 in Southern League Division One South and West.

Shortwood took the lead against the run of play through Kevin Slack's 19th-minute opener, following a quickly taken free-kick.

Striker Bushin responded immediately, scoring with an acrobatic overhead kick in the next attack.

David Steele and Andy Taylor, twice, came close to putting the home side ahead before Bushin headed the 78th minute winner to hoist Tiverton up to third in the table ahead of tomorrow's eagerly anticipated derby at home to Taunton Town.

Taunton – beaten 2-1 at Shortwood at the start of the month – also won in the League on Saturday, 3-2 at home to Swindon Supermarine.
