Breastfeeding helps mums regain figure
MOTHERS who breastfeed are more likely to get their figures back quicker, research suggests.
A woman's body lays down fat stores in pregnancy, usually on the hips and bottom, and these fat stores will be metabolised when the infant is born, and the mother starts to lactate.
If a mother chooses not to breastfeed, then the body will not draw on these fat stores and they will remain.
Jan Potter, breastfeeding strategy lead at Plymouth Community Healthcare said: "Once breastfeeding is established, a mother will use approximately 500 calories per day producing milk for her baby. The hormonal effect of breastfeeding causes the uterus to contract, and return to its pre-pregnant shape. Breastfeeding mothers get their figure back quicker.

"And breastfed babies regulate their own appetites. They stop feeding when they are full. This becomes blue printed on the infant's brain and enables them to continue regulating their appetites as they grow. So infants who are breastfed are less likely to be overweight. Their weight gain is slower and more gradual, which is healthier."
