IT is great news that the gates of Devonport Naval Base are to be reopened to the public.

It is well over three years since the last Navy Days and it has been an event many of us have missed.

Now the recently arrived base commander, Commodore Graeme Little, is holding discussions with the council to stage an open day in 2013 and possibly have a parade.

Commodore Little is to be commended for this move. This announcement and the interview he has given to The Herald reveals a man eager to play his part in reconnecting our city to its Naval heart.

    “it is a good idea and i for one would like to see it happen.

    As mentioned earlier maybe a parade, the field gun crew could perform - what about something similar to what happened on the hoe during armed forces day - and have the marines perform to some extent aswell?

    there is plenty of potential and i think it would be good for people to have the opportunity to come and see, the modern day version, of Plymouth's history”

    “BOREDOFPLYM1 said "In total there are 77 commissioned ships in the navy. 18 of the commissioned vessels are major surface combatants (5 guided missile destroyers and 13 frigates) and 10 are nuclear powered submarines (4 ballistic missile submarines and 6 fleet submarines). In addition the Navy possesses an aircraft carrier (in service as a helicopter carrier/amphibious assault ship), a helicopter carrier and 2 landing platform docks. The total displacement of the Royal Navy is approximately 340,000 tonnes

    “I never said warships.....I have counted in the support ships to the Navy (as with the EU Nations), RFA, technically they are part of our Navy but run independently, so without them our Navy could not function at all......

    Anybody tell me the number of Admirals, Rear Admirals, Assistants etc... and all the other leeches on the taxpayer, I would love to know.”

    “Would this be the same navy that's taking yet more work away from the dockyard, putting 600 more workers on the scrap heap? What will it take to break Plymouth's "Naval heart"?”

    “Yes bring back Navy Days. Britains Navy is still one of the largest in Europe, and packs a powerful punch...

    UK= 110 Ships
    France = 113 Ships
    Germany= 81 Ships
    Spain= 93 Ships
    Italy= 72 Ships

    Plenty of ships for a great day as a tribute to our sailors.

    The only thing that bothers me is there are more Admirals than ships (pen pushers) than are needed.”

    “Should be able to have a few ships in? Which ones do you suggest? Those that are doing anti-piracy? Or those out in the Gulf? Or maybe the ones that are broken and in refit? It's a great shame, but there are precious few left now.”
