Bucking the books trend
THE welcome news that library use has risen by a phenomenal 200 per cent in Cullompton, following the opening of a new one there, shows what happens when you deliver good public services.
In these times, we're often schooled to think that public services are inherently a bad thing – that a service from a council is bound to be inferior to the same service provided by the private sector.

But in Cullompton, Devon County Council was behind the building of the brand new library, and despite criticism over parking, as well as the look of the building, has proved it can do a good job.
Its success also lays to rest the belief of some people that libraries are an institution with no future in our digital world.

This library has shown that by improving the environment and modernising what you do inside you can make libraries more relevant to more people.
Like everything else, libraries need to change with the times, to continue lending books, but to embrace the new, thus keeping themselves at the centre of the communities in which they sit.
Thank goodness Devon didn't follow other county councils in closing libraries.
