AROUND 1,000 young Scouts helped to spread some festive cheer in Exeter when they took to the streets to deliver people's Christmas cards.

Fourteen groups from across the Exeter District Scouts participated in the Scout Christmas Post, which saw the district headquarters in the city turned into a make-shift post office.

Leading local home builder Taylor Wimpey Exeter got behind the youngsters, who are aged from six to 18, and sponsored them to bring season's greetings to people's doors. The company, which is building new homes in the area, has donated £400 to the running of the charitable service.

The Scouts district commissioner Jason Dugdale is a site manager at Taylor Wimpey Exeter's Monterey Park development in Bovey Tracey.

Janine Copleston, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey Exeter, said: "We first heard about the Scout Post from Jason, who has been involved with the Scouts for over 30 years. As soon as he told us about their need for a sponsor, we were delighted to help out."

This year marked the 32nd year the scouts have provided a Christmas post in Exeter, delivering cards to up to 40,000 homes. Since 1981, they have delivered almost a million Christmas cards in and around Exeter.

Post boxes were placed in various shops around the city and people dropped their cards off and had them delivered for just 25p. Collections took place three times a day and all proceeds will go to the local scouts and The Children's Hospice. Mr Dugdale said: "It's great to see Taylor Wimpey getting involved with the Scout Christmas Post. Our service guarantees your festive mail will be delivered on time and for half the price."
