A RUN-down Grade II listed building has been bought by a local authority after the owner claimed they could not afford repairs.

Number 9 Fore Street, Witheridge, has been shrouded in scaffolding and plastic sheeting since £14,000-worth of emergency work was carried out in 2010 at North Devon District Council's expense.

A repairs notice was issued on the property in February 2011 when it was estimated about £100,000 needed to be spent to bring it back up to scratch.

The thatched building is in a conservation area and is said to be adversely affecting the character of the street.
