Bus lane fines
ON DECEMBER 10 I received a bus lane penalty charge notice from Plymouth City Council. When going to Marks and Spencers just off Tavistock Road on November 30, I crossed over into the bus lane a short distance before the gap provided for this purpose. I have done this many times in the past without penalty, usually when there is a delay with traffic ongoing to Derriford roundabout.
In conversation with my sister she told me that her neighbour had been penalised for the same offence in the same place.
On December 17 my son's partner told me she had received a penalty notice for the same offence in the same place. The CCTV photo showed her to be even nearer to the entry than me when she crossed over. Her offence was on the same day as me but she received notice a week later. She also informed me that her friend also had been penalised for the same offence again in the same place.
I would be interested to know how many other Herald readers have been penalised for a similar offence.

Yesterday on BBC news it was reported that Government funding to councils was being reduced and councils were struggling to maintain the same level of service.
Draw your own conclusions.

“Everyone who receives a penalty for just being in the bus lane should challenge it. I believe CCTV enforcement is only intended to be used to allieviate conjestion caused by illegitimate use of the lane ie. obstructing a permitted vehicle.
Has anyone ever seen such an instance along the Derriford-bound stretch? I certainly haven't, but plenty of people cross the lane into a clear exit in good time to ease traffic flow while the bus lane is in its usual state of empty, which seems common sense!
But then, common sense probably has little chance of prevailing against legalised mugging - I'll let you know how I get on!”

“Well, remember this at election time - those smug faces smiling at you benevolently from the pages of the Evening Herald are really self-serving thugs.
They just want your money to boost their allowances - you are just a pleb, so pay up.”

“It is just a quick money making scheme by the council, if it were for the purpose of detering people from using bus lanes, the cameras would be on more bus lanes, on longer stretches. Its no conincidence that at least 4 of these cameras are on lanes where traffic is allowed to filter in. They know full well people nip in the lane a bit earlier, be it lack of patience or whatever. People like Mr Salvage above are doing no wrong by using the lanes a couple of car lengths earlier, it does ease congestion slightly but the council have cottoned on to this and devised a way of making money out of it. Ive seen it recently where people have been queing to enter the bus/filter lane, blocking the normal traffic lane up to the filter point, then its clear after that. Just causing more congestion.”

“I conclude you haven't the patience to wait for the right point to cross.”
