Chapel arsonist spared prison
A MAN who admitted firebombing a former Methodist chapel as it was undergoing conversion to an Asian community centre walked free from court yesterday.
Anthony Foster, 38, from Falmouth, and another unknown man threw bottles filled with flammable liquid through a window at the building at Quenchwell, Carnon Downs, near Truro.

Magistrates in Truro yesterday gave Foster an eight-week suspended sentence for arson, which met with "disappointment" from the police officer in charge of the case who said he believed the incidents were racially motivated.
Speaking after the hearing, Insp Mark Richards from Truro police said he did not think the Asian community would be reassured by the magistrates' actions.
He added: "I'm disappointed with an eight-week suspended sentence. We were treating this series of offences as religiously or racially motivated.
"Foster has made limited admissions to the court. I don't think the community are under any misapprehensions about the motivation for some of the attacks that have taken place at Quenchwell."
The targeted building was being renovated and Foster was caught on CCTV set up by police after the site was previously attacked and racist graffiti painted on the walls.
He pleaded guilty to one count of arson, one count of failure to answer police bail and one count of committing an offence while the subject of a conditional discharge.
Diane Thomas, chairman of the magistrates, told Foster he was sentenced to eight weeks for the arson which would be suspended for one year. Foster was given 14 days in custody for each of the other offences to run concurrently, which he has already served.
Prosecutor Janet Furlonger told the court that Foster – who had 95 previous convictions – and another man went to the chapel on July 12 and broke a window.
"They later returned and threw flammable items through the window which caused scorching and minor burning," she said.
Magistrates were told that Foster was identified by fingerprints on the bottles of flammable liquid and by his tattoos seen on the CCTV cameras.
Miss Furlonger said that Foster initially refused to comment and did not accept responsibility. The other man involved in the attack had not been caught.
The prosecution could not offer any evidence to prove a racial or religious element to the attack.
At a previous hearing, Foster's defence barrister Michael Gregson said Foster was helping a friend who said he had a grievance with a builder working on the site. Foster was unaware of the building's former status as a chapel or of its conversion to an Asian community centre.
The court was told the site was subjected to a number of vandalism attacks in June and July of this year.
Insp Richards said he did not think the Asian community would be reassured: "At the end of the day, we are talking about someone who has thrown two petrol bombs into a premises without checking who or what is in there."
The inspector sought to reassure people in the Asian community that the police were continuing to do everything they could to investigate and prevent other offences.

“whist noone would ever agree to such a crime the fact still remains that having immigrants in a county that has a history of poverty and political discrimination in areas of housing and employment does nothing to foster harmony..putting immigrants or asians who have made money by selling property in the north and buying up homes that deprive youngsters of home ownership merely creates a division ..it is at a political level that these issues need to be addressed....sadly such wanton vandalism is inevitable...and must be accepted by non whites who reside in this county,,,,,,true....they would be a lot safer,,,and probably happier wherever they came from....rather than their present accomodation,,,they will always be outsiders.....just like white northerners are....or Londoners...there can be no descrimination.....ethnics must be branded with all outsiders who only come to settle for retirement,,,”

“What sort of justice system do we have? 8 weeks and concurrent terms for other offences- what deterrent is that? No wonder so much crime is about, offenders don't care and then the Police are expected to carry out their duties diligently and expect a suitable response from magistrates for their efforts - instead their efforts are deflated and the next time they probably will feel like not putting so much effort into their investigations. Who are these magistrates - social workers? Never mind the racial aspect, arson is a serious crime in itself and deserves much more than was given!”

“How is this possible??!! Yet again, another judge who doesn't care, or mind people doing this. So many previous convictions and putting lives at risk - and this is all he gets. At the minimum he should reimburse all the fire and police call outs, and pay for the damage. Simply, there is no justice in the UK.”
