VERSATILE defender Anthony Charles is ready to play wherever he is asked by Plymouth Argyle manager John Sheridan.

The 31-year-old has appeared twice for the Pilgrims, after signing as a free agent on a contract until the end of the season, and lined up in two different positions.

Charles made his debut at left-back in the 0-0 draw with Accrington Stanley at Home Park on January 26.

He then played as the right centre-back when Argyle were held to a goal-less draw by visiting Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday.

Charles was called upon to fill that role by Sheridan because of a groin injury to Curtis Nelson.

The experienced defender had been restricted to 10 starts and one substitute appearance for Northampton Town this season before he was released by them last month.

So Charles is pleased to have slotted straight into Argyle's side after being brought to the club by Sheridan.

He told Herald Sport: "You want to play, so no matter where you are asked to play, you are going to play.

"I have played in the right-side centre-half position many times before so it's not new to me. It's just something that maybe takes the first few minutes to get used to.

"I'm out there playing and after recent months where I haven't been playing regularly, I'm happy to be out there.

"I have got a slot in the team where, ideally, I would like to play (left centre-back) but if I'm asked to play any position where it benefits the team then I'm happy to do that.

"It's not really about one person. It never has been at football clubs. It's about the team.

"Whenever you are asked to slot in somewhere, you should do it with all guns blazing," added Charles.

Sheridan thought Argyle should have been beaten Dagenham and Charles shared that sentiment.

Charles said: "We had enough chances – a couple in the first half and a couple in the second – to come away with a win.

"They (Dagenham) had one in the first five or 10 minutes where we didn't start sharp. A point wasn't ideal but in the position we are in you have got to take it and build from there.

"We had a clean sheet. That's two in two games and, as a defender, it's something I'm happy with."

Argyle will play their first away game with Sheridan as manager when they take on relegation rivals Aldershot Town at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Charles has had three different spells with Aldershot, winning promotion to the Football League with them in 2007/08, so he will be on familiar territory.

He said: "We will see how we do away from home. I have only experienced the last couple of games at home.

"There might be a little bit less pressure on us. We have to set our target of going there and trying to get the three points.

"If we can do what we have done in the last couple of games defensively, and still create, we should be okay."

Meanwhile, there are nine professionals in the Argyle XI squad for the friendly against Torquay United at Home Park this afternoon (2pm).

Among them are senior players such as Maxime Blanchard, Paul Wotton and Jamie Lowry.

Admission is free for club members. Otherwise, it is £2 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Argyle (from): Ollie Chenoweth, Colin Watson, Maxime Blanchard, Jamie Richards, Ben Purrington, Andres Gurrieri, River Allen, Matt Lecointe, Paul Wotton, Jared Sims, Jamie Lowry, Tyler Harvey, Isaac Vassell, Nathan Summers, Josh Hutchinson.

“Yes agree but survival is first on the agenda otherwise playing in the Conference would mean a total clear out of everyone.

    Survival first then contracts”

“How many of this squad are out of contract in the summer? A thorough clean out is required.”

“DEFENSIVELY LOOKED SOUND. When the Crowd scream HIT HIM - then the tackle should be going in (bit slow on a couple of occasions) - otherwise Good !!

    Creativity needed for STRIKE.

FINISHING was below par and plenty of work on the Training Ground Needed.

UP THE TEMPO - PLAY ON THE FLOOR

GREEN ARMY. COME ON ARGYLL !!

p.s Plenty for the Supporters this SEASON as the FIGHT continues to push up the League.
Motivation could not be higher with squaring up to pompey (blue army) next season.”
