IN COURT: Cases heard at Central Devon Magistrates' Court this week

Oliver Jones , 19, of Caroline Close, Exeter, drove on Withycombe Village Road on July 24 without due care and attention. He pleaded guilty and was fined £180 with a £15 victim surcharge. He will also have to pay £60 costs and his licence was endorsed with six points.

James Carter , 27, of Tanners Yard, Crediton, used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour during an incident on January 14. He pleaded guilty and received a six-month conditional discharge. There was no order for costs due to his limited means.

Helen Rickson , 46, of Ryll Grove, Exmouth, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention in Exe Bridges at the junction with Bonhay Road on May 21. She was fined £250 with a victim surcharge of £15 and costs of £85. Her licence was endorsed with six points.

Patrick Morgan , 46, of Turks Head Lane, Honiton, admitted stealing four cans of beer and food worth £9.88 from a garage in the town on October 20. he was fined £50 with a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs. However, he was detained in the courthouse for a short period in lieu of the fine.

Tarrot Gliddon , 23, of Laburnum Road, Exeter, damaged a front door window to the value of £100 belonging to a woman without lawful excuse. He pleaded guilty and received a six-month conditional discharge. He will have to pay £75 in compensation and a victim surcharge of £15.

Annette Lawson , 47, of Mermaid Court, Exeter, admitted driving in Holloway Street on October 7 when the proportion of alcohol in her breath was 92mcg in 100ml, exceeding the prescribed limit. She was fined £100 with a £20 victim surcharge and with costs of £40. She was also disqualified from driving for two years which can be reduced by 24 weeks if she satisfactorily completes an approved driving course.

Paul Bamford , 38, of Sycamore Road, Tiverton, has had a suspended sentence of four months he received after being convicted of dishonestly assisting in the retention, removal, disposal or realisation of stolen goods, namely laptops and an iPod worth £2,180, implemented as a sentence of three months. It came after a review of his progress with the drug rehabilitation requirement of his suspended sentence order took place.

Adam Lawson , 29, of Widgery Road, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress on October 4. He received a four-month conditional discharge with costs of £45.

Glen Simpson , 54, of Dorset Avenue, Exeter, pleaded guilty to driving in Alphington Road on October 5 when the proportion of alcohol in his breath was 93mcg in 100ml, exceeding the prescribed limit. A community order was made which will see him have to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months. He will also have to pay a victim surcharge of £60 and costs of £85. In addition, he was disqualified from driving for two years which can be reduced by 24 weeks if he satisfactorily completes an approved driving course.

David Hartley , 39, of Wordsworth Close, Exmouth, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress on October 8. He received a nine-month conditional discharge with a £15 victim surcharge and £40 costs.

Noel Jarman , 24, of Okehampton Road, Exeter, failed without reasonable excuse to comply with the terms of a community order be failing to attend appointments on two occasions and failing to provide a reasonable excuse for doing so. The order was issued in respect of an offence of harassment and or damaging a police vehicle. A new community order was issued which will see him have to undertake an alcohol-specified activity with probation, participate in the building better relationships programme and it also has a supervision requirement for 18 months.

Corey Soper , 20, who gave an address c/o Arena Park, Exeter, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a requirement specified in a notice from the Secretary of State in that he failed to attend appointments as directed under section 65 of the Criminal Justice Act. He was fined £60 with a £20 victim surcharge but was detained in the courthouse for a short period in lieu of this. Magistrates said they took this action as other methods of enforcement were either inappropriate or unsuccessful.

Barry Thorne , 33, of Dickens Drive, Exeter, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress on August 12 and the offence was racially aggravated. he was fined £300 with a £15 victim surcharge and costs of £85.

Craig Welling , 46, of Budleigh Salterton, was drunk and disorderly in Exmouth on October 5. He pleaded guilty and received a 12-month conditional discharge with a victim surcharge of £15 and no order for costs.

Stephen Jones , 58, of Essington Way, Exmouth, drove in Essington Close on October 8 when the proportion of alcohol in his breath was 50mcg in 100ml, exceeding the prescribed limit. He was fined £185 with a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs. he was also disqualified from driving for a year which can be reduced by three months if he completes an approved course.

Jonathan Walker , 53, of The Street, Kilmington, pleaded guilty to driving on roads in the Axminster area on October 8 while he was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence. A community order was made which will see him have to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months and pay a victim surcharge of £60. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence for six months. He did not face a separate penalty for driving when he had no insurance on the same date.

Alan Denford , 37, of Queens Crescent, Exeter, stole two bottles of sherry to the value of £12.78 on September 29. He received a 12-month conditional discharge with no order for compensation or costs due to his limited means.

Anthony Burclaff , 49, of no fixed abode, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress on October 23. He was fined £50 with a £20 victim surcharge but was detained in the courthouse for a short period in lieu of this.

Lucy Miles , 24, of Barley Mount, Exeter, failed without reasonable excuse to surrender to custody on October 23. She pleaded guilty and was fined £50 with a £20 victim surcharge.

Joanne Mortimore , 36, of Rifford Road, Exeter, pleaded guilty to stealing foodstuffs worth £601.54 with another on October 8. She received a 12-month conditional discharge with no order for costs. She also admitted failing to surrender to custody without reasonable excuse on October 23. For this she was fined £50 with a £20 victim surcharge.

Terence Waller , 39, of Albion Hill, Exmouth, stole various grocery items worth £28.86 from Tesco on October 23. He was fined £50 with a £20 victim surcharge but was detained in the courthouse for a short period in lieu of this. The offence was committed while he was subject to a conditional discharge for an offence of theft but no action was taken in respect of this.

Lewis Spence , 20, of Temple Crescent, Tiverton, stole tobacco and a key of a value unknown belonging to a man on October 14. He received a 12-month conditional discharge with a £15 victim surcharge. There was no order for costs.

John Saunders , 27, of Magdalen Road, Exeter, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a no entry sign in Wonford Road on May 31. he was fined £35 with a £15 victim surcharge and costs of £30. Hie licence was also endorsed with three points.

Mathew Drew , 30, of Spencer Avenue, Exeter, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress on March 5. He received a 12-month conditional discharge with no order for costs.

Phillip Gliddon , 18, of Park Way, Woodbury, changed his plea and admitted assaulting a man during an incident on June 2 in Exmouth. A community order was made which will see him subject to a curfew for four months. He will also have to pay £150 in compensation to his victim with no order for costs.

Ben Reid , 34, of Maple Drive, Exmouth, drove in Withycombe Village Road on June 11 when he was using a mobile phone. He pleaded guilty and was fined £45 with a £15 victim surcharge and costs of £30. His licence was also endorsed with three points.
