Calls for social networking page which ridicules Exeter students to be taken down
Students at the University of Exeter have been warned they are damaging their job prospects by comments made on the internet.
More than 3,000 people joined a Facebook page entitled Spotted: Exeter Uni Library allowing members to send anonymous messages about other people they have seen in the library.

But senior management claimed the comments amount to harassment and have demanded the page be removed.
They said it was “unwise” for students to leave comments on public internet pages because potential employers could read them.

One comment said: “To the brunette with five apples, three sandwiches, four packs of crisps and a cup of coffee, all you’re missing is your sleeping bag.” Another comment said: “To the guy who just woke up from a four-hour ‘nap’, your shocked face expression was just priceless.”
A university spokesman said some of the comments posted amounted to harassment of people who went to the library to study.
“Most people would find the idea of having their appearance, dress sense or sexual availability commented upon and shared amongst thousands of other people deeply unwelcome. It is hard to see why anyone would think this is a good idea,” he said.
“It is also very unwise for students to leave comments since many employers now scan social networking sites and will take a view on people’s professionalism based on what they read there.”
