Devon and Cornwall Police said the Jaguar then hit a Renault van, which was parked on the road, before careering into the front garden of a house, only stopping when it struck the wall.

The driver, a 22-year-old local man, allegedly started to run away and had to be restrained by a witness until police officers arrived to arrest him.

A police spokesman confirmed that the driver was "reported to have left the scene of the crash".

Emergency services were alerted at about 12.15pm on Tuesday. The man was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified. He was questioned at Torquay and then released on bail until January 21.

One fire crew from Paignton attended the incident after a request from the ambulance station to attend. Firefighters made the vehicles safe.

Nobody was hurt in the collision.

Ramshill Road was closed in both directions between the Marldon Road junction and the Langridge Road junction while the vehicles were recovered.
