COASTAL communities in the South Hams area are set to receive a cash boost of more than £450,000 from the Government.

The South Devon Fisheries Development Project has been awarded £450,347 - one of 20 successful projects nationwide to win funding from the Coastal Communities Fund.

The project aims to support and promote the region's fishing and tourism industries through "innovation and investment".

South Hams District Council says the money could save 441 full-time jobs, and could create up to 38 full-time and 52 part-time jobs.

The funds will be used to support 100 businesses to reduce costs, develop supply networks and secure business in the region's fishing and tourism industries.

Councillor John Carter, member for planning, employment and community, said: "This is welcome news to our coastal communities and will deliver a major boost to the region's fishing and tourism industries.

"The project will retain and create jobs and apprenticeship schemes as well as supporting local businesses and innovators. These exciting plans will assist the region's economy for years to come."

The £24 million Coastal Communities Fund was launched in 2012 to provide coastal towns in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland with money to help pay for projects that can transform and diversify seaside economies.
