Celebrated case of the 'man they could not hang'
AT its last dinner meeting, members and guests of the Rotary Club of Torbay Sunrise heard Frank Turner, Blue Badge Tourist Guide, relate one of the most celebrated murder cases in British legal history, that of John "Babbacombe" Lee.
Condemned on circumstantial evidence of the horrific murder of his elderly employer, Miss Emma Keyse, Lee escaped death three times when the trapdoor of the scaffold failed to operate, earning him the dubious honour of The man they could not hang.
Sunrise is unique in being the only Breakfast Rotary Club in Torbay.
Meetings are held on Thursday mornings, with the third meeting being an evening meeting with a speaker, at the Toorak Hotel.
