Celebrity is in 'alliance' with dementia carers
BROADCASTER Angela Rippon who visited Tiverton earlier this year has backed the start of a new campaign that aims to improve the lives of people with dementia, and their carers, in Crediton.
Alzheimer's Society ambassador Angela Rippon visited Mid Devon in May this year to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Unite Carers charity and is now lending celebrity backing to another cause to help older people in Crediton.
The Crediton Dementia Alliance will be launched at a Dementia Friendly Day and information fair in the town next week. The free public event, to be opened by the Mayor of Crediton Frank Letch, will feature speakers on a range of topics, from insights into dementia to what is available to support patients and carers.
Ms Rippon said: "I welcome the launch of the Crediton Dementia Alliance and its aim of bringing key stakeholders, community and business leaders together to improve the lives of people with dementia."
At the event, members of the Alliance – made up of representatives of the Crediton branch of Devon Senior Voice, the town's two Rotary Clubs, together with Alzheimer's Society volunteers and other community groups – will explain the idea of a 'dementia-friendly community' and how Crediton can work towards becoming one.
Ms Rippon added: "I know how important it is to challenge the stereotypes surrounding dementia and to work in partnership with others so people with dementia feel supported and can live well in their own communities.
"The condition affects not just the person diagnosed but their family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues – in fact, all of us in the community. That's why projects like this are so important in raising awareness and putting plans into action to support all those affected by dementia have a better quality of life, now and in the future."
The Crediton Dementia Friendly Day, which has been organised by the Crediton branch of Devon Senior Voice, will take place on Friday, September 20, between 10.30am and 3.30pm, with registration from 9.30am, at the Boniface Centre, Church Lane.
A buffet lunch and refreshments will be available for £3.50 per head. Organisers are keen for those wishing to attend to book for the day by phoning 01803 732678 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
