PLYMOUTH Argyle chairman Sir Roy Gardner is convinced that the Pilgrims have the capabilities to preserve their status in the Coca- Cola Championship.

In an official statement confirming that Paul Sturrock had been relieved of his duties as manager of the Pilgrims' first team, Gardner said: "The board has decided to make this move following the continuing poor set of results.

"Paul Mariner will take charge of all football matters until further notice. We are convinced that we have the capability to improve our performance and remain in the Championship." Argyle are in penultimate place in the league.

Sturrock, meanwhile, will continue with the club in a business- support role, working alongside executive director Keith Todd.

The statement concluded: "The board would like to thank Paul Sturrock for his considerable contribution to Plymouth Argyle Football Club over many years."
