'Changes were essential'
IN a statement, Steve Baber, chairman of Chulmleigh Academy Trust board of directors, said the changes were essential to resolve the school's low academic performance.
He said: "During the consultation period directors attended many meetings with parents and the community and read many written responses to the consultation proposals.
"The issue appears to be that some parents did not agree with the decision of the board which went against some of their own views.
"I personally made my decision based on achieving the best education possible for the children within the resources available to the academy.
"When Lapford Primary School became a member of Chulmleigh Academy Trust, pupil performance at the school was well below the expected standards and much work has gone on to improve pupil achievement.
"One such short term strategy was to invest in an additional teacher for two terms, from January 2013, and this has proven to be effective. However, levels of funding do not allow for this additional teacher to continue to be employed.
"Achieving high standards for all pupils is our goal and pupil performance supports our need to implement this change."
