Chiefs flanker Johnson misses out on England selection
Exeter Chiefs flanker Tom Johnson was among ten players sent back to their clubs after not being selected in England’s 23-man squad for the first Autumn International Series match against Australia next month.
Due to the Elite Player Squad agreement, Premiership clubs are allowed to reclaim and play their players if not chosen – meaning Johnson could now feature in Chiefs’ home league match against Worcester Warriors on Saturday.
As well as Johnson, Dave Attwood (Bath), Freddie Burns (Gloucester), Luther Burrell (Northampton), Danny Care (Harlequins), Kyle Eastmond (Bath), Ben Foden (Northampton), Alex Goode (Saracens), Matt Kvesic (Worcester) and Christian Wade (Wasps) returned home last night.
England head coach Stuart Lancaster said: “It has been good to get into camp and spend some time with the players. I have met all of them individually and they had forwards’ and backs’ meetings and a positive training session at West Park Leeds.
“We are releasing ten players back, some of whom will play in the Aviva Premiership this weekend.
“There are still places to play for and we won’t finalise the side to play Australia until much closer to the game, not least because of the matches this coming weekend, so it’s a chance for those going back to stake a final claim for inclusion in the 23.”
England open the series against the Wallabies at Twickenham on November 2, followed by Argentina (Nov 9) and New Zealand (Nov 16).
