The Cistercians were associated with sheep husbandry and wool production and with neighbouring Buckfastleigh being situated within the foothills of Dartmoor and surrounded by the rivers Dart, Mardle and the Dean Burn, the towns woollen industry prospered.
At its peak in the late 19th century, the town saw a significant increase in building including mill workers cottages and public buildings.
In the graveyard of the ruins of the 13th Century Holy Trinity Church is the metal barred tomb of the Cabell family.
Legend has it that Richard Cabell was so wicked that demons and black dogs breathing fire raced across Dartmoor and circled, howling around his tomb.
The Cabell family were the inspiration for the Sherlock Holmes novel 'Hound of the Baskerville'.
Beneath the church runs an extensive system of caves where the fossilised remains of Sabre Toothed tigers and woolly mammoths have been found. The caves are home to a population of horseshoe bats and have been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The town offers a variety of shops, food outlets and public houses, with a wealth of leisure facilities including football and rugby clubs, tennis courts, open air swimming pool and indoor climbing centre.
The A38 South Devon Expressway provides excellent road links to equidistant Exeter and Plymouth, with the stunning South Hams coastline approximately 21 miles away.
