Christmas lights switch-on to be five-hour event
HUNDREDS of families are preparing for the start of the Christmas season in Tiverton with the switching on of the town's festive lights and a magical lantern parade.
A five-hour spectacular is planned this weekend to help the town celebrate the countdown to Christmas in style, with Devon singer-songwriter Adam Isaac as the star attraction who will switch on the town's light display before performing a short concert to draw the event to a close.
Many local groups will also get a chance to join in with the event, including Tiverton Operatic Society, Blundell's Junior School Choir, Blundell's Soul Band and the Exe Valley Voices Choir.
Children at eleven local primary schools have been busy preparing their own lantern made from willow frames with battery lights inside them to carry through the town. As many as 300 children are set to take part in the parade which will be led by a samba band.

working The spectacle is due to set off from Fore Street at 5pm. It will follow a route along Angel Hill, St Peter Street, Newport Street, Bampton Street before returning to Fore Street approximately 45 minutes later.
Road closures along the route will be in place from 4pm to around 7pm, so people are advised to arrive early to avoid disruption. Mid Devon District Council will provide free parking at the multi-storey car park for the duration of the day..
The programme begins at 2pm with Christmas carols and there will be a number of further musical performances throughout the rest of the afternoon. At 6pm, the air will be filled with the rousing sounds of North Devon Pipes and Drums playing in the Pannier Market before moving into Fore Street.
At 7pm the lights will be switched on by Adam Isaac who will then give a short performance from the stage in Phoenix Lane before the evening draws to a close at 7.30pm.
Organisers are delighted to have secured the services of former Uffculme School pupil Adam Isaac for the switch-on for a four figure sum. He was propelled to fame earlier this year when under the tutelage of Sir Tom Jones he reached the quarter final stage of BBC1 prime time talent contest, The Voice.
The run-up to the Christmas lights switch-on has been hampered by ill-feeling on Tiverton Town Council which has a sub-committee which organises the event.
