I HAVE lived in Eggbuckland for 44 years but I have never come across so much dog mess on the pavements and the field between Bearsdown Road and Langmead Road, there is no way any child could play football in the field like my grandson and a dozen or so did every evening after school. I feel embarrassed walking my granddaughter to school each day with our dogs and hope that people don't think that my dogs have left the pile on the pavement, Come on you owners start watching what your dog is doing at least until he has been.

“I made a Freedom of Information request to PCC just last week and found out that the following:

Number of fixed penalties issued for dog fouling:
    2011/12 = 7
    2010/11 = 9
    2009/10 = 23

There are 3 Animal Health and Welfare Officers.

In addition, Labour's manifesto included the following commitments:
    5. Keep dog waste bins regularly emptied. It is not fair to get tough with
irresponsible dog owners if the Council doesn't do its bit too.
    6. Buy a 'fido' and a 'poover' to keep pavements and playing fields
free of dog mess. These machines are designed to easily remove harmful
    dog waste safely and quickly

I'm assured by Tudor Evans that a 'fido' has been ordered.

However this issue is a serious one and it is evident from the number of fixed penalties that PCC are either not enforcing or impotent to enforce.

It's all well and good dealing with the dog mess, but one can't help but think that dealing with the source of the fouling (ie fining and enforcing the law) by taking a zero tolerance approach would be the most appropriate course of action. A 'fido' won't solve the problem, it will only take away some of the fouling.”

“ewan 55 I couldnt agree more about cats, my garden is a toilet for all cats in my area. They dont even bother burying it anymore. Absolutely vile. Cat owners should be made to train their cats to go on their own property NOT their neighbours. And cat lovers should not own more than one cat because of this same reason.”

“Yes I agree that if a few people were caught & made an example of e.g. photos on front of papers or posters of individuals placed on lampost etc if may make people think twice before leaving their deposits.”

“Has anyone actually seen a Dog Warden? Do they exist? If they are out there why are they not raking in thousands in fines?”

Also please educate your children not to throw sweet wrappers, drinks cans, crisp packets, paper etc in the streets.... Isn't up to us all to respect our streets ?”

“PCC are always bleating on about cutbacks so why dont they have a dog warden out and about spending time in a particular area every day for a week and fine everyone they catch.
Then move to a different area and do the same,at least it would start to send out the correct message.
One of the most ridiculous comments came from a neighbourhood meeting on this subject when we complained about the problem was from a PCC warden who said "There is nothing you can do as a member of the public,it has to be witnessed by someone like us"
You are able to report anyone you see if you happen to know where they live and then a dog warden will drop a note in their letterbox or "have a word"
    Not good enough.”

“There is a maximum fine of £1,000 available to the courts and they ought to apply it a few times as well as naming the culprits. This would act as some sort of deterrent to those other irresponsible owners. If they are on benefits it should be deducted from their benefit in instalments until paid off and over a reasonable time ( in months not years).”

“I coach at a local junior rugby club and have witnessed owners allowing thier dogs to foul on the playing area. Upon challenging them they deny that it was even their dog's mess, even though I saw the animal in action.
I know that there are a lot of responsible owners out there (I am one and with a Dogue de Bordeaux I don't need a poop bag but a bin liner) but unfortunately, as per usual, the small minority will always spoil it and give the majority the same brush to be tarred with.
If you take on a dog please be prepared to take on the responsibility that goes with it. If not, don't buy a dog, it really is that easy.
And while I'm on a rant, when exercising you dogs near to a childrens playing area please keep them on a lead. They may be the softest dog in the world but the kids don't know that and some of them are genuinely terrified, and what the dog thinks os a game can have a profound effect on their young minds.”
