THE closure of Torquay's busy Fleet Street is to be extended for a month longer than originally planned.

Work is under way on an improvement scheme along a 140-metre section at the lower end of Fleet Street.

As part of the Torbay Council scheme to regenerate the Fleet Street shopping area, contractors are removing block paving originally laid in 1989 which will be replaced with granite paving.

The works schedule included the closure of Fleet Street until this week, with buses diverted.

But excavations have uncovered unforeseen conditions including more mass concrete than anticipated which will have to be broken up before removal, various uncharted services, and high voltage cables that must be protected.

The water main will have to be protected with concrete, and ducts for various communications companies will also have to be diverted or lowered.

Torbay Council has agreed to extent the road closure until March 19.

Businesses in the area have been informed and the council apologised for any inconvenience.

The road is still open to pedestrians and contractors will be working on Saturdays and bringing in extra people at the appropriate time.

Utility companies will need to programme the essential diversion and protection work relating to their services but the council says they will try to get the road re-opened sooner rather than later.

The work is the first phase of a proposed £2.5million revamp in Fleet Street still due to be completed by the middle of June.

“"How is it nobody knew what was under the ground"

Because it's underground and they can't see it?

"Surely surveyor details from the past would tell them exactly what's there and they could have planned accordingly?..."

Well I bet they never thought of that

"no way will the road part be finished by March the 19th...a month later than planned! Make it 2 months minimum!"

Oh? have you checked surveyor plans from the past and planned accordingly? And done extensive surveys of your own, of course.

It's always the dumb people who think the world is dumber than they are.”

“It seems that buses are managing OK without having to use Fleet Street! So much for their moans about going bust if they have to use an alternate route.
