Coalition pledges hunt ban vote
The House of Commons is to vote on whether or not to reopen the debate over the future of foxhunting.
The coalition agreement promises that a motion will be tabled to gauge the mood about the possible repeal of the Hunting Act.
Only if an overall majority of MPs back the motion would a free vote be held on reversing the ban on hunting with dogs.
Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said the initial vote would enable the Commons “to express its will” on repealing the hunting ban. Many MPs, particularly Liberal Democrats, believe the issue was settled six years ago while the Labour party is vehemently opposed to repeal.
Mrs Spelman added: “I am not able to prejudge how MPs will vote and there are a lot of new members.”
Several new MPs in the Westcountry made clear during the campaign that they did not want to see parliamentary time used on this issue.
A government source said: “This is not a priority.”
