A COLLECTION of rare character jugs has sold for more than £21,000 at auction.

Enthusiasts from Australia, Italy, London and America battled it out at Plymouth Auction Rooms via telephone and the internet, as they bid on a collection of 30 rare Royal Doulton character jugs.

One of the jugs was modelled on the American athlete Jesse Owens who won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Another, modelled on the Cuban politician Fidel Castro, sold for £6,900.

Paul Keen, managing director at the auction rooms said: "This is quite possibly a UK record price for a Doulton character jug made after 1950. Most Doulton character jugs are worth less than £100 but this collection was exceptional."

The Fidel Castro jug was one of only three ever produced, with each one having a different colour shirt. It was the first time the jug has come on to the open market, Mr Keen said.

The jug formed part of a collection which had been acquired by a Plymouth man over the last 20 years.

Many of the jugs were produced in low quantities, with several from editions where only 100 were ever made. The subjects of the pieces included several American politicians such as Ronald Regan and Franklin Roosevelt. All 30 jugs sold and came in at a total of £21,400.
