A LEGO obsessed Thornbury boy has bought a flavour of India to the city using almost 6,000 bricks to build a masterpiece.

Eight year-old Connor Saunders-Staddon built the Taj Mahal in his bedroom over four months from what is said to be the biggest Lego kit in the world.

The Taj Mahal set, which contains 5,922 bits, is based on one of the wonders of the world, a mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his favourite wife.

The Thornbury primary pupil said he had heard that David Beckham had also bought the set but dedicated Connor finished it first.

"I felt really proud — I love building with Lego as I get really bored," he said.

"Sometimes I break up my old models and think, why did I do that? Then I build them all over again.

"I wish all the Lego in the world was only 1p so I could buy loads of it."

Connor bought the kit with £200 worth of birthday money after completing another huge kit: the Batmobile.

Speaking from his Lego model-filled bedroom, he said he would like to be a toy inventor when he is older, making things such as money boxes and models, rather than Lego.

His proud mum, Sharon, said: "It's just amazing. We never thought he'd finish it but he did. We're really proud."

She said he had worked on it before and after school, taking breaks at weekends.

Connor said: "When I have children I'll break it up and get them to build it and I might help them."

His next mission is to buy the Star Wars Death Star kit, said to be the next biggest kit in the world.

“Well done Connor. My little girl knows you from school and she is shocked to see you in the paper. I think you might be considered a little famous after this.”
