In the study, commissioned by AXA car insurance, 61% said their enjoyment had decreased due to rising costs.

The research, involving 2,000 motorists across the UK, showed more than a fifth of motorists in the South West said they were already struggling to keep up with costs.

With 29% of drivers expecting fuel to be between £1.41 and £1.50 by the end of the year, 38% want the Government to ensure fuel tax is capped.

Amanda Edwards, of AXA Insurance, said: "As all of us are becoming increasingly concerned about finances, it's no surprise that the costs related to driving are at the top of motorists' frustrations."
