When Dad came west to work, I became a fledgling Plymothian. It didn't take long to strike up new friendships and go on summer weekends to the seaside. After a half-hour's bus ride from home we'd find ourselves at Admiral's Hard, waiting for the Cremyll ferry and its ten-minute crossing which in the late Fifties cost 6d (2½p) and 3d for youngsters; through the turnstiles on the far bank of the Tamar, we'd board one of Skinner's coaches from Millbrook.
A picturesque country ride would eventually see us alight at Cawsand Triangle, just above the village, and our party would trek back up towards Rame until we reached the tiny hamlet of Forder. A quick hop and skip up the hill would reveal the grandeur of Whitsand Bay and we would descend via the road to Polhawn Fort before taking another steep track to the cliff-top, thence over another stile and down to Polhawn Beach. I suppose the journey took two hours or more. Unloading at our usual spot, my father would set up the Primus. One of the us would walk over to an artificial basin at the foot of the cliff and fill a kettle with collected streamwater, and the other adults would set out the picnic which might well include succulent beef pie, egg and bacon pie, sandwiches in brown-paper wrapping, and various home-made cakes and buns.
The day always ended too early and yet we were always the last folk to leave the beach and haul all our bags up the cliff and trudge down to catch the bus back to Cremyll, thence ferry over the Tamar and the bus home. A full day!
