An event to showcase farming and the environment is being run by the University of Exeter at Ide next month. Billed as "Devon's first Farming Food and Nature Celebration", it will be held at West Town Farm on October 6, aimed at the county's farmers, food producers, landowners and consumers – and there will be discussions, displays and local food.

The organiser is Dr Matt Lobley, of the University's Centre for Rural Policy Research, who will present one of the talks. His subject will be mapping Devon's food economy.

Other talks planned will be given by: Rebecca Hosking, on how wildlife can increase your farm's productivity; Cath Jeffs, on farmers saving cirl buntings; Will Barnard on grass-fed beef, "better for people and the environment"; and Rob Wolton on the joys and perils of managing a farm for livestock and nature.

The event is scheduled to last from 10am to 4pm. Children are welcome, though the day will be mostly discussions with some activities.
