County stands firm on action to remove flood wall
THE deadline for a Bickleigh man to remove the wall he build to protected his centuries-old property from a repeat of devastating flooding has passed.
Tony Davies was given 10 days to remove the wall he had built outside his house which is located close to the River Exe by highways engineers who said it infringed onto the road and thus presented a hazard to other road users.

Mr Davies extended an existing small exterior wall at the end of November last year, after water came up through the floor into his ground floor living room during torrential winter weather.
He said he had previously offered to reach a compromise with Devon County Council as the local highways authority which would see him reduce the extent to which the wall extends into the road way.

In a statement last week, a Devon County Council spokesman said: "We have no choice but to take enforcement action. While we are sympathetic to Mr Davies' position, this wall has been built on a particularly narrow point on the A396 and presents a hazard to highway users."
