Course hones herdsman skills
YOUNG farmers in Mid Devon are being offered a chance to improve their skills in dairy herd management thanks to a course being run by the Laura Persey Trust.
Following the success of previous years' programmes additional spaces are now available for the highly popular To Be a Better Herdsman course.
The six-week course starts next week and is held at a specialist training centre near Honiton.
Run by two vets, the course is part theoretical and part practical.

Those signing up will be given an insight into increasing understanding of the cow and her environment, as well as learning a number of skills which can be used by anyone on a daily basis to help improve cow health, performance and profitability.
The course is run at the Colliton Barton training centre, which is attached to a large working dairy farm.
Each module runs between 11am and 3pm on a Thursday, starting on September 26 and running through to October 31.
The total cost is £100 for the six days' training and the price includes lunch and refreshments.
There may still be other opportunities to get on further courses before the end of the year, with the Trust currently discussing whether to run a 'better beef farming' course during November.
