CRAIG OVERTON made his England Lions debut overnight.

The 18-year-old Somerset and North Devon all-rounder, from Northam, was the only England bowler to strike in an eight-wicket defeat to  Victoria  in Melbourne, Australia.

Rob Quiney, the Australia opener, hit 122 before he was caught by Simon Kerrigan off the bowling of Overton.

The pace man also dismissed Quiney's fellow opener, Chris Rogers, for 23, caught by Chris Wright.

Rogers played for North Devon for three seasons from 1997 to 1999.

Overton, batting at No 8, made 19 in England's 225 for eight off their 50 overs.

He was bowled by Darren Pattinson after facing 26 balls and hitting one four and one six.

Derbyshire's Gary Ballance top scored for England with 86 off 96 balls, hitting 11 fours and two sixes.

Overton admitted it was a "huge shock" to be told he had been added to the original 16-man squad.

His performance in the opening fixture of an eight-match tour puts him in line to play more often than might have been expected.

England's next game is also against Victoria at the Junction Oval, Melbourne, starting at 11.30pm (GMT) on Sunday.

A five-match one-day international series against Australia starts on Saturday, February 16.
